Client Communication: Tips for Freelancers
Great work alone doesn't keep clients coming back — communication does. Here are practical tips to build trust and keep your clients informed.
Set expectations early. Before starting any project, align on scope, timeline, deliverables, and communication frequency. Put it in writing.
Give regular updates. Even a short weekly message like "Here's where we are this week" goes a long way. Clients don't like silence.
Be honest about delays. If something is going to take longer than expected, say so early. Clients respect transparency far more than excuses after a missed deadline.
Make it easy to reach you. Pick one or two communication channels and stick with them. Whether it's email, Slack, or a project management tool — consistency matters.
End projects well. Send a wrap-up summary, deliver final files neatly, and ask for feedback. A smooth handoff leaves a lasting impression and often leads to repeat work.
